Janice Tchalenco

Janice Tchalenko, to a far greater extent than other contemporary makers, has been involved in the entire spectrum of ceramic issues, and has often had a considerable impact on them. She started as a tableware potter at the Leach school aiming to produce pots in the traditional style. She then shocked her public by introducing new shapes and bright colours, setting a whole new agenda for the use of pattern and colour. A Fellow of the Royal College of Art, Janice Tchalenko has had countless exhibitions including permanent displays at, among many other places, the Victoria and Albert Museum of Art, and the Stockholm National Museum. Her design and technical input at Poole Pottery, particularly with ‘Living Glaze’, has been a major influence on the development and direction of this sensational new look. Janice’s latest accolade has been the award of this year’s Laura Ashley Foundation prize for ceramics.
