Alan White, Poole Pottery’s Master Potter, first joined the company 34 years ago to train under the legendary Guy Sydenham. He worked throwing traditional pots and the exciting and innovative Delphis range, forerunner of today’s ‘Living Glaze’. Alan, who attended the Bournemouth and Poole College of Art, progressed to Supervisor, Throwing Shop Manager and eventually Craft Section Manager. Now the Master Potter at Poole, Alan creates many one-off and limited edition pieces with a following of dedicated collectors. His throwing skills have progressed to world-class levels but the most spectacular development in recent years has been his emergence as a highly talented decorator of his own work. His latest creations in both ‘Living Glaze’ and textured ware put him at the leading edge of ceramic design. ‘Seafire has been enthusiastically received as a standard giftware range while his sensational hand thrown ‘Sunburst’ and ‘Furnace’ items are enjoying worldwide acclaim. Despite his long experience, Alan’s approach remains vital. Millions will have seen him on the ‘Generation Game’ where ‘popular demand’ has resulted in many repeat appearances.
