Alan Clarke is very much a ‘hands on’ designer with a deep knowledge of glazes and hand techniques. His knowledge is rooted in nearly thirty years’ experience with Poole Pottery covering every aspect of production. His natural artistic ability culminated in the creation of the tableware pattern ‘Dorset Fruit’, some nine years ago. It was an incredibly successful design which still sells universally today. This established Alan as a key member of the design studio. Here he has been involved in many of the leading edge looks emanating from Poole over this period. His latest, and possibly finest contributions are the ‘Living Glaze’ patterns produced both solely by him, as in ‘Odyssey’, and ‘Aurora’, or in co-operation with Anita Harris and the leading ceramic artist, Janice Tchalenko. His creations for the ‘Millennium’ and ‘Eclipse’, ‘Planets’ and ‘Orbit’, are surely among the finest pieces of interpretative popular design to be seen today.
